![]() American Chickeries/Keiser Turkey Hatchery
![]() American Chickeries was established in 1923. It was started by Clarence A. Keiser; my great grandmother. It was located on sixth street in Grampian, PA. It was the largest hatchery in Pennsylvania at the time. The sprawling main building covered 3 city blocks. It was two stories high and had 42 rooms and a large stable. This was a family owned business, but it employed 30 additional men in the 1930s. Many of Grampian's citizens survived on turkey and chicken during the Great Depression. The Keisers were said to be very generous people and provided food to people who had little or none during the Depression.
